The Magic of Metaphor

There’s a great reason why everybody’s so “wild about Harry.” Because it’s so rich in characters with whom we can identify.

Through the storyline, we can find a myriad of ways to explore and challenge negative beliefs. For example, why does Draco Malfoy deserve a redemption arc? Is it possible that his guilt about half-attempts to take down Dumbledore hint at a deep empathy and compassion that family expectations had otherwise smothered?

That’s before we even get into the spells! One of my favorite strategies when we’re needing a little umph in EMDR is to break out a “Riddikulus” or “Expecto patronum.”

And it works. It’s really cool!

Dust off your cape

Superhero movies are also full of power and punch just waiting to be harnessed.

Recently, I’ve discovered a whole new world of magical battling: Dungeons & Dragons.

Although I haven’t joined a campaign, I’ve been amazed at how much mental health skill building is involved!

It requires solving problems, unleashing the imagination, visualizing strengths, collaborating with allies, building trust, improvising thoughtful dialogue, and exercising cognitive flexibility.

That’s an arsenal of skills you can use for just about anything!
